    Erdogan’s famous quote about protests which he alluded to again over the weekend as he spoke about the latest protests, “you bring one hundred thousand, we bring one million!” This sounds very familiar to those at the receiving end of other Islamists that came to power thanks to the democratic process. Think Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Ennahda in Tunisia, and Hamas in Gaza.

  • Turkish President Gül approves controversial bill restricting alcohol

    On May 24, Parliament’s General Assembly adopted the alcohol bill proposed by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), tightening restrictions on the sale and advertising of alcoholic beverages. The controversial alcohol bill is seen as one of the reasons protesters have taken to the streets as part of the Taksim Gezi Park protests, voicing demands that include respect for their lifestyles.

  • Tunisie : Soutenons la Femen tunisienne Amina

    La Femen tunisienne Amina est emprisonnée depuis le dimanche 19 mai 2013. Son procès a débuté ce jeudi 30 mai 2013 à Kairouan avec, officiellement, comme seule et unique charge le port illégal d’un spray d’auto-défense. Cette charge contre Amina se fonde sur un Décret beylical datant de….1894 qui prévoit des peines de six mois à cinq ans de prison pour détention illégale d’engins incendiaires ou explosifs. Mais, en réalité, c’est, encore, la liberté d’opinion qui est jugé avec le procès d’Amina : « on veut (…) lui faire payer son appartenance à un mouvement féministe radical ». On veut, aussi, rassurer la base électorale islamiste extrémiste, en vue des prochaines élections.
