  While being moved by the generous intentions which motivated these symbolic actions, we nevertheless take distance from some of these which, in fact, will further increase the alas already prevaling confusion between personal religious faith and communal identity politics. While indeed solidarity is very much needed, we call on well-meaning people to select other symbols when showing solidarity with the Christchurch massacre’s victims. Symbols which would not lead to ideological compromising with the Muslim far-right, under the pretext of fighting the anti-Muslims xenophobic far-right. It would be a major disaster if the racist homicides perpetrated in Christchurch against Muslim believers would, in the end, benefit the Muslim extreme-right. Let’s make sure it does not happen.

  B’Tselem investigation published today proves a soldier fired live ammunition, hitting ‘Abd a-Rahman a-Shteiwi, 9, in the head. A-Shteiwi was injured last week while playing in the entrance to a home in Kafr Qadum during the weekly demonstration in the village. Now hospitalized in critical condition, he is the latest victim of the reckless open-fire policy that allows soldiers to use live fire even when neither they nor anyone else is in any danger.

  On the same day Mannan was murdered, a Hindu priest was also killed. The previous Saturday saw university lecturer Rezaul Karim Siddiqui hacked to death, and writer Nazimuddin Samad was killed earlier in the month. These people were all targeted for advocating and/or representing a secular society. While the precise motives behind the individual murders may vary, they all embody a threat to secular rationalism as a whole. By perpetuating the rhetoric employed by extremist factions, the authorities have implicitly legitimised extremist claims. That they have arrested bloggers who have challenged Islam only serves to underline just how cowed they are.

La police a trouvé plusieurs armes dans la mosquée, et une personne qui s’y trouvait est parvenue à maîtriser l’assaillant avant l’arrivée des forces de l’ordre.

  Avec le passé de l’esclavage (1619-1865), les Etats-Unis ont pris l’habitude de mesurer les races, de caractériser les personnes selon ce critère. Les Américains ont le sentiment que les races sont séparées et que celle dite « blanche » est menacée d’être « submersible », pour reprendre les termes de l’extrême droite française.

  Mireille Knolln 85 ans, était une rescapée de la rafle du Vel’ d’Hiv en juillet 1942. Elle y avait échappé de peu en réussissant à regagner la zone libre grâce au passeport brésilien de sa mère. Elle vivait seule depuis le décès de son mari, rescapé de la Shoah.
