How the Murders of Journalists in the Middle East Are Brushed Aside
7 February 2019, by siawi3What I’m really asking is why the killing of one Arab journalist is more equal than the killing of other Arab journalists? Why, for example, is the fate of Jamal Khashoggi, a friend and colleague of many of us, of infinitely more pressing importance than the fate of Yaser Murtaja? Unfortunately, “investigation” in the Middle East means obfuscation. It’s like the sign they leave on your hotel room handle when you wish to sleep. Do not disturb. Silence. And when you wake up, with luck, the nightmares will all have been forgotten.

UN: Statement of the WHRD IC on arguments using religion, culture and tradition to block negotiations on women’s rights at the CSW57
26 April 2013, by siawi3We condemn the use of arguments based on religion, tradition and cultural specificity and relativism to justify violence, discrimination and violations of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of women and girls. Some conservative states, including Iran, Russia, Syria, and the Vatican made interventions attempting to reverse progress in the language of women’s human rights. The Muslim Brotherhood claimed that the draft conclusions is a “misleading and deceptive” document which will lead to the “complete disintegration of society” as they claimed it violates Islamic principles, and called on “leaders of Muslim countries and their UN representatives to reject and condemn this document”.

Women Living Under Muslim Laws respond to Muslim Brotherhood statement on CSW
16 March 2013, by siawi3Governments attacking the CSW are using arguments based on religion, culture, and tradition to justify violence and discrimination towards women and allow violations of their fundamental human rights. WLUML denounces the use of‘religion’ or ‘tradition’ to give legitimacy to patriarchal practices. WLUML knows from its own extensive research that from the religious point of view alone, the Qur’an can be read and interpreted in many different ways. Furthermore, cultural and traditional beliefs and values often influence religious interpretation. WLUML supports civil society and non-governmental organizations in their struggle to challenge traditional values and practices that are antagonistic to fundamental human rights norms, standards and principles.

UN COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN 57 DRAFT AGREED CONCLUSIONS - UN WOMEN
16 March 2013, by siawi3’There is no turning back. ’ ’By adopting this document, governments have made clear that discrimination and violence against women and girls has no place in the 21st century. ’
It seems that the brutal move by Muslim Brotherhood against CSW had the opposite effect to what it hoped for. -
