UK: Brexit and minorities
6 April 2019, by siawi3The coverage simply doesn’t reflect the diversity of the Brexit vote. Not all Leave voters are white, left-behind people who live in de-industrialised ‘hollowed-out’ communities. Nor are they all dispossessed ‘nativists’ longing for a bygone era of British territorialism and imperial might. Data suggests that euroscepticism in Britain’s South Asian population – particularly the UK’s Indian ethnic group – is stronger than previously thought.

UK: THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF RACE AND CLASS
16 July 2019, by siawi3Officials eyeing you with contempt. Police treating you as scum. A sense of being constantly watched and judged by professionals. Living in fear of benefit sanctions. A lack of community facilities. Such is likely to be your experience if you are working class. Such is also likely to be your experience if you are of black or minority ethnic origin. But here’s the odd thing: people from the working class and minorities are rarely seen as facing the same kinds of issues. Instead, in political debates from Brexit to welfare benefits, minorities and the working class are seen as having conflicting interests and often set against each other.

USA: Just Hours Before Trump Unleashed More Racist Attacks at Rally, 137 House Democrats Joined GOP to Kill Articles of Impeachment
24 July 2019, by siawi3“House Democrats are working with Republicans to avoid launching an impeachment inquiry. Let that sink in. A. Day. After. They. Condemned. Trump. For. Being. A. Racist.” Democrats’ decision to kill the impeachment articles as Trump continued his racist rampage against members of Congress Wednesday night represented yet another failure by the House majority to listen to grassroots demands and take meaningful action against the president.

India: Indian government prepares all-out assault on tribal rights
19 June 2019, by siawi3“Colonial
conservation took three or four generations to steal the lands of about
10-15 million indigenous people throughout the world. India is now looking
to steal the lands and livelihoods of a further 8 million tribal and other
forest dwellers in a few months, and to shoot them if they try and go
back. The militarization of India’s forests is being done under the guise
of a law, drafted with WWF, supposedly in aid of conservation. One of the
most massive human rights violations in the world is being planned, with
almost no voices outside India raised in opposition.”
