  “Polygamy is against the Canadian Criminal Code, yet some imams are openly willing to do it for men who want second wives, including one of the most prominent imams in the country.” The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) believes polygamy is based on the values of tribal patriarchy and is inherently harmful to women and children. We supported the decision of Justice Bauman of the B.C. Supreme Court to uphold the ban on polygamy.

  In a conservative, patriarchal Muslim context, face veiling really symbolises women’s invisibility and inferior status. That a woman should not be seen and heard, and should she venture into the public space, she must be as invisible as possible, is an affront to human dignity. It also puts pressure on other women to conform as it sets a standard that a good Muslim woman is someone covered from head to toe. In a Muslim majority context, I would support a law that bans the face veil on security and public interest grounds.

  Now that safe spaces and universal acceptance have become the norm, it is fashionable to tolerate all kinds of proclivities and inclinations in the name of diversity. But until recently, we respected the nebulous line that faintly dissects the parameters of what we consider to be good and evil. Not so today, where there is a growing campaign to destigmatise everything, even if doing so requires us to unpick the moral fabric of our society.
