Every once in a great while, the movement gets a big, tangible win. Today is one of those days. Representative Betty McCollum just introduced historic legislation, expanding on her previous leadership by pushing forward the first bill to leverage U.S. funding around multiple Palestinian rights issues.

We have one request: tell your representative to support this bill.

The Palestinian Children & Families Act (H.R. 2590) ensures that our taxpayer dollars aren’t used by the Israeli government to imprison and torture Palestinian children, steal and destroy Palestinian homes and property, or further annex (steal) Palestinian land. It was introduced with 13 original cosponsors, including the entire Squad and new progressive freshmen Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush, and Marie Newman. One thing is clear: the Palestinian rights movement in Congress is growing.

The bill was endorsed by a powerhouse group of over 70 organizations ranging from well-known Palestinian rights groups that we have been fighting alongside for years, like Defense for Children International Palestine, the Adalah Justice Project, the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, American Muslims for Palestine, the American Friends Service Committee, and Churches for Middle East Peace, to organizations leading on a range of social justice movements, like the Working Families Party, the Movement for Black Lives, United We Dream, and Justice Democrats.

Every member of Congress should be standing up alongside these leaders. We should not be bankrolling Israel’s violent oppression of Palestinians. This bill is how we start holding the U.S. accountable for where we put our money.

Right now, take one minute to let your member of Congress hear from you. The louder and bigger of a force we are, the harder it is for them to ignore us. And we do not have time to be ignored.

The Palestinian Children and Families Act shows the long term power and strength of the Palestinian rights movement. It grows directly out of the No Way to Treat a Child campaign, led by DCIP & AFSC, that guided Rep. McCollum’s previous legislation, and from all of the tireless activism, organizing, and advocacy that JVP and JVP Action has been doing in Congress for years. We need to keep pushing.

The bill could not come at a more critical moment. The pandemic has exposed systemic injustices across the globe, intensifying the harms that come from state violence and discrimination—Israel is no exception. During the pandemic, the Israeli government has continued to imprison Palestinian children under a military court system, putting them in grave danger of contracting COVID and separating them from their families. Horrifyingly, at a time when we are all asked to stay at home, the Israeli government has actually increased the rate at which it is demolishing Palestinian homes.

The best time to act was decades ago, but the next best time is now. Start by demanding more from Congress. Tell them to support H.R. 2590 now.

JVP Action is a multiracial, intergenerational movement of Jews and allies working toward justice and equality in Israel/Palestine by transforming U.S. policy. We are an independent, nonpartisan, 501(c)(4) organization formed as the political and advocacy arm of Jewish Voice for Peace.
