Statement regarding the attack on Staša Zajović

On April 28, 2015, the president of the Serbian Radical Party, Vojislav Šešelj[1] – also a defendant at the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia – verbally attacked the coordinator of Women in Black, Staša Zajović. The incident first happened before the main hearing in the court process for the rehabilitation of Draža Mihailović.[2]

“You hag! I’ve never seen an uglier woman. You are a witch! Have you always looked so ugly, or did something happen to you? They should’ve strangled you in the crib, when they saw how ugly you were. Do you have a girlfriend?

The court guard did not react to this, and Vojislav Šešelj remained in the court room.

Staša Zajović spoke to the court guard:
“I’m not speaking with the war criminal. Please protect me from this war criminal.“

After the hearing, Vojislav Šešelj continued to throw insults at Staša Zajović, outside the court room.

“Who gave birth to this monster? I don’t get who brought her here today at the Palace of Justice. She’s radiating primordial evil. How come they didn’t strangle her as soon as she was born, so she wouldn’t pollute the environment? Up till now I would always ignore the likes of her, but when I realized today just how ugly she is, I couldn’t just stand by and watch. It has to be said publicly, the public needs to be warned. There’s nothing feminine in her.“

Sexist insults hurled at Women in Black represent the continuation of Vojislav Å eÅ¡elj’s political activity. For over twenty years, he has been continually spreading fascist ideology, with no impunity.

Asked to comment on the incident, Staša Zajović said:
“This behavior is typical for the fascist scum. He has a long-standing habit of publicly shaming women, especially those who are vocal about their anti-fascist convictions. His call for execution is nothing compared to what this criminal did against the civilian population in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Croatia, and in Kosovo.“

This was just one in a series of attacks organized by fascist groups in Serbia targeting the women defenders of human rights. The reason lies in their public advocacy of facing the past and punishability of war crimes commited in our name. State institutions hold responsibility, since they do nothing to prevent or react to such attacks. Their omission helps sustain the atmosphere of unpunished and unpunishable violence against all those who dissent from the views espoused by the regime of Aleksandar VuÄ ić.

The media reported differently on this incident, mostly characterizing it as a personal argument. We would like to use this opportunity to point to the relativization of this attack: insulting can by no means be characterized as argument, as there were not two sides inolved in it. Also, we are appealing to the media to report on this piece of news fairly. Resorting to tabloid sensationalism would only lead to trivialization of verbal attacks.
