“I am proudly standing here to support my family, my belief: my atheism. I am fighting for my rights..../...How do you expect me to go back to Pakistan and learn Islam, when I am a free-thinker and an atheist? How do you expect me to go there and be proud of my atheism, when you can be sentenced to death for not believing in Islam?”

USA: Portland, Oregon May Soon Pass Non-Discrimination Protection for Atheists
14 February 2019, by siawi3On Wednesday, the Portland City Council will discuss a proposed ordinance that would add “non-religious” to the list of protected classes under city law. While “religion” is already a protected class, that word doesn’t make it clear that non-religious people are included in the mix. The ordinance would make that protection explicit.

28 January 2017, by siawi3One of the challenges many of us face is that we are ourselves discriminated against by people who are themselves also discriminated against. This leads to situations where media stories that accurately portray some of my experiences look instead like negative portrayals of Muslims as part of a wider environment in which Muslims are rarely portrayed positively.

The first generation of ex-Muslims
28 January 2017, by siawi3Ex-Muslims are lauded for their bravery and strength and deserve every bit of praise. When all is said and done, each one of us is scarred. I think of us as the first-generation of ex-Muslims. We will pave the way. Every scar on our hearts, our minds, and sometimes our bodies, will be worth it, because the next generation of ex-Muslims will have it easier. We are making sure of that. They will never know what if feels like to be completely alone because we will reach out to them online, no matter where they are on the globe. They will never feel like they are crazy. They will never feel like they are the only one on the planet to ever feel this way. They will never feel like they have no choice but to follow the status quo. We will be their net. And we will be there for them if they happen to fall.

Despite these harsh realities, countless asylum seekers in Britain and the west as well as refugee claimants in places like Turkey continue to be detained, refused protection despite evidence of persecution, mistreated and deported.

Unwrapped
16 December 2018, by siawi3It’s for these reasons, and for my family’s safety and my own, that I’m forced to write this article anonymously. It’s because no one has the right to defy, question or criticize our culture that allows these misogynist, outdated doctrines to remain. Those who had the courage to do so have been silenced.
