Papua New Guinea: Manus Island asylum seekers ’bashed by PNG police’
4 January 2017, by siawi3Australia saw it fit to detain asylum seekers from fundamentalist and war affected areas in the Middle East and Sout Asia outside their territory, in the nearest independant country: Papua New Guinea - this did not trigger any reaction from the international community. Asylum seekers on Manus Island say two Iranian men are being treated for injuries they received when they were beaten by police officers on New Year’s Eve. Both were seriously injured. The incident follows the death of a Sudanese asylum seeker who collapsed at the Manus Island detention centre just before Christmas. Advocate says Sudanese man allegedly complained about ill-health for months before seizure. “This system is designed to kill us one by one.”

Pakistan: Two abducted Chinese teachers killed, claims IS
9 June 2017, by siawi3The two Chinese workers were abducted in Quetta, where the pair had been studying Urdu at a language centre. Beijing is ramping up investment in its South Asian neighbour as part of a plan unveiled in 2015 that will link its far-western Xinjiang region to Gwadar port in Balochistan with a series of infrastructure, power and transport upgrades. The IS group has been making inroads in the country through alliances with local militant outfits, although its presence is generally downplayed by the government.

NEW YEAR’S RAPES: Why We Can’t Stay Silent on Germany’s Mass Sex Assaults
12 January 2016, by siawi3Yes, it is racist to suspect that all brown men who look like me are rapists. It is bigoted to presume that all Muslim men who share my faith advocate religiously justified rape. It is xenophobic to assume that all male refugees are sexual predators awaiting their chance to rape. But let me be absolutely clear: What will feed this racism, bigotry, and xenophobia even more is deliberately failing to report the facts as they stand. Doing so only encourages the populist right’s rallying cry against “the establishment.” If liberals do not address such issues swiftly, with complete candor and courage, the far-right and anti-Muslim populist groups will get there first. They have been doing so for a while now.

Europe: Far-right group sends ship to confront boats rescuing refugees in Mediterranean ‘and take them back to Africa’
28 July 2017, by siawi3More than 85,000 refugees and migrants, most of them sub-Saharan Africans, have been rescued and brought to Italy this year, with fears the total could reach 200,000 by December. More than 2,000 have died in crossings. ’Defend Europe’, a far-right group linked to the European anti-Islam and anti-immigrant “identitarian” movement, is currently sailing a 25-crew 422 tonne vessel to the Libyan coast in a bid to block search-and-rescue vessels operated by humanitarian organisations.

Syria: “It has probably become more dangerous to be a woman than a soldier in armed conflict.”
29 June 2017, by siawi3Six years since the conflict began, an estimate of 400,000 dead and around 11 million have been driven from their homes. Violence is used to control, coerce women and destabilize their relationship within the family and community. WHRDs need protection mechanisms as they fight for human rights in conflict zones, but also as refugees living and working in Lebanon, Jordan or Iraq.
