Europe: we are all refugees
30 August 2015, by siawi3There are more and more of them. From political refugees, civil war refugees, to refugees from climate change. Those who run away from hunger, repression, bombs, and those who run away from fires, flood and nuclear disasters. They are the vanguard, for the dangers that overwhelmed them are coming to us ,too. It is about all of us. The nomad population is growing, thanks to political and ecological failure. We are wasting our own lives by neglecting planetary politics. In the Mediterranean the nomads drown in illegal boats while the seaside swimmers find the ancient sea to be lukewarm with greenhouse heat — it’s not refreshing any more. The glaciers are melting into torrents down the Alps, wildfires are leaping in rich high-tech California, the refugees are landing on every shore they can physically reach.

Myanmar: UN experts warns against forcibly returning refugees without garantees from the government
3 February 2018, by siawi3“For returns to be ever realized in a way that is voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable they must be treated as equals – citizens of Myanmar with all the rights that that status affords.” The UN expert saw great anxiety and fear when speaking to refugees about the prospect of returning to Myanmar. Refugees have been entirely excluded from conversations about their fate, and going forward they must be involved in a meaningful way. Talk of repatriating hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas anytime soon was premature.

USA: ICE attacks Oakland mayor for warning residents about immigration sweeps; she stands by her actions
1 March 2018, by siawi3Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf alerted residents that immigration raids might be imminent. Oakland, like many California cities, has declared itself a sanctuary for those here illegally, and officials there have vowed to fight President Trump’s immigration crackdown.

USA: Seventeen Jewish Groups Call on White House to Fire Adviser Stephen Miller
12 February 2018, by siawi3The organizations, including American Jewish World Service, Americans for Peace Now and T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights, issued the call in an open letter they sent Thursday to Trump White House chief of staff, Gen. John Kelly. The letter was spearheaded by the National Council of Jewish Women.The co-authors wrote that Miller, who favors an immigration reform he said would benefit applicants who would assimilate more easily into American society than others, has “extreme viewpoints and advocacy of racist policies.” They slammed Miller, who himself is Jewish, for ’opposing the beliefs we hold dear’.
