UK: Hacking Justice: A brilliant documentary about the #WikiLeaks publisher Julian #Assange
30 June, by siawi3For his lawyer, Baltasar Garzón, the pioneer of Universal Justice, much more is at stake than the freedom of an independent journalist and publisher. As head of Assange’s legal team, Garzón warns that the growing influence of intelligence services puts freedom of information, our right to know what our governments are doing, and democracy at risk.

India: PRESS RELEASE: Teesta Setalvad roughed up as Gujarat ATS personnel barge into her home
30 June, by siawi3Ms Setalvad was a co-petitioner in the case that was dismissed by the Supreme Court on Friday that challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s exoneration. Zakia Jafri, wife of Congress MP Ehsan Jafri who was killed in the riots, was the main petitioner. Setalvad is being targeted today as part of an elaborate witch hunt. In fact, many international publications have also vouched for this in their reports including those by New York Times, BBC as also organisations like Frontline Defenders. We sincerely urge friends of CJP, civil society, activists and journalists to come together to demand justice for Teesta Setalvad. In her complaint, Setalvad has stated that the assault left her with a bruise on her left hand, and that she feared for her life.

UK: OFFENDING THE GATEKEEPERS
1 July, by siawi3The tenets of one religion are often offensive to believers of another, and to non-believers. There can be no freedom of religion without the freedom to give offence. There is no right not to be offended.

UK: Time Is Running Out For Julian Assange
1 July, by siawi3In view of both the press freedom implications and the serious concerns over the treatment Julian Assange would be subjected to in the United States, my assessment as Commissioner for Human Rights is that he should not be extradited.

The Media Celebrated Julian Assange and Is Now Too Afraid To Defend Him
3 July, by siawi3What I find most ominous about the Assange case is the willingness of the media to largely ignore it. When WikiLeaks first released its hoard of documents, extracts from them were published in The New York Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Le Monde and El País. None of these publications has campaigned for Assange’s freedom, though if he did anything wrong, then so did they.
