In wake of the recent attacks against women teachers in the South of Algeria, SIAWI decided to republish this analysis written after a similar attack took place in 2001. It is to be noted that, like the women workers in Hassi Messaoud in 2001, the women teachers of 2021 too migrated South from other regions of Algeria, for economic reasons; they too had to leave their families behind to earn cash and help support their families; and they too, as was the case with the victims of the 2001 pogrom, are mostly women “without a wali” ( a tutor, a male guardian) who live together in shared rooms or dorms. They too are accused of stealing jobs from local men.
