12 February 2014, by siawi3Last month, Oklahoma Representative Mike Turner announced planned legislation that would ban all marriages in the state, in response to a court decision to allow same-sex marriages in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma legislature may consider a bill to end government licensing of marriage entirely. The bill, which is part of a broader strategy to avoid same-sex unions throughout the state, calls to mind efforts by lawmakers in the 1950s to undermine federally-mandated desegregation by shutting down public schools in the American South.

10 February 2014, by siawi3On 18 Dec, the Speaker of Parliament took out a 4-page ad detailing his plans for the “reformation, restoration, and modernisation” of Parliament through getting rid of various carvings, in particularly the totem pole has to go as it represents immorality, idols, and witchcraft, through “demonic masks,” carvings that “look like cannibals,” are of “eastern or African or foreign origin,” or are of “ugly figures of African (voodoo) origin.” On the same day and in the same newspaper, a number of fundamentalist Christian leaders took out a full-page ad celebrating the work of the Speaker. It was suggested to make PNG a truly Christian country, that pesky section of the Constitution regarding freedom of religion would also have to be totally redone.
