L’appropriation culturelle devient l’une des principales grilles d’analyse de l’“identity politics” . « Insinuer qu’une culture serait le propre d’un groupe n’est pas très éloigné des positions d’un Trump ou d’un Salvini »

India: The caste factor
25 December 2017, by siawi3Among the few indisputable consequences of the just-concluded Assembly election in Gujarat is the forceful return of a peculiar form of identity politics. While religious identity, in the form of aggressive Hindutva, was the dominant tool for mobilising voters during the past two decades, this election campaign reintroduced an old form of identity politics first pushed by the Congress during the Assembly elections in 1980. The 2017 election results, declared on December 18, show that this form of identity politics still has wide acceptance in the State even if Hindutva continues to dominate.

Israël : Comment une université cède devant le communautarisme

We need to stop conflating ‘Muslims’ with Islamists
26 September 2016, by siawi3It’s insidious how the Islamist narrative has become mainstream everywhere – in the media, in social policies, in discussions around minority communities and human rights, in ‘progressive’ politics … it’s also very much part and parcel of how some freethinkers view ‘Muslims’ – homogenised masses whose default is always the Islamist no matter how many refuse and resist – often at great risk to their lives. Only when we stop conflating “Muslims” with Islamists and begin to see the immense dissent will we be able to ally with and show solidarity with progressive social and political movements and see the commonalities in our fight for secularism and against Islamism in Europe and across the globe. This is key if we are to link up and strengthen the international front against theocrats of all stripes. And not a moment too soon.

Canada: Multiculturalism is failing Canada, needs a review
30 November 2013, by siawi3“I think what we are doing in this country [Canada] is that this idea of multiculturalism has been completely distorted, turned on its head to essentially claim that any thing anyone believes — no matter how ridiculous and outrageous it might be — is OK and acceptable in the name of diversity.” Multiculturalism’s emphasis on diversity is divisive, and subverts social cohesion in Canada, and in the development of Canadian identity. In the long run, multiculturalism leads to ethnic marginalization and ethnic stratification particularly when there is unequal distribution of power in society. After almost four decades of experience, it would be prudent to give Canadian multicultural policy a second sober look.
