Khurto Hajji Ismail, the Yazidi Baba Sheikh, or religious leader, said an edict he issued to reintegrate former captives has helped overcome traditional resistance to accepting back women who were raped or members who converted to another faith, even if it was under force.

Iraq: Islam is not part of our genetic make-up.
10 December 2017, by siawi3How does it sound if we call Westerners “good Christians”, “bad Christians”, “people of Christian heritage” or “secular Christians”? The answer is that you cannot label people from a certain geographical area in such a way. In my view this carries racist connotations and is disempowering and patronizing. There are so many ordinary citizens from the Middle East who do not identify with any of the terminologies mentioned above. Instead, they want Islam to be kept out of politics.

Iraqi women protest against proposed Islamic law to permit child marriage
9 March 2014, by siawi3About two dozen Iraqi women have demonstrated in Baghdad against a draft law approved by the Iraqi cabinet that would permit the marriage of nine-year-old girls and automatically give child custody to fathers. The proposed new law’s defenders argue that the current personal status law violates sharia religious law. “We believe that this is a crime against humanity” .“It would deprive a girl of her right to live a normal childhood.”

Iraq: ISIS is no-one’s representative
21 August 2014, by siawi3In any conflict situation, the first received reports are of attacks on women, restrictions on their movement as well as rape. These are not new of such Jihadist movements or groups, which are heavily armed and extremely primitive. They have no respect for human rights or women’s rights. According to news reports, Islamists are going to houses and to families and marrying young girls or children in what they call Jihadist Nikah – which is basically child abuse and against children’s rights and human rights. They are also carrying out lots of killings and public executions. And they are carrying out terror at all levels

Iraq in today’s litterature
10 June 2017, by siawi3’Today’s Iraqi writing is certainly much better and braver than the timid writing under Baathism.’ Trauma and a determination to survive despite the odds can spur innovative thinking, but these are not the optimal conditions for creativity to thrive. As Blasim astutely acknowledged, what is needed now is stability: “Peace is the laboratory of the imagination.”
