  First you said that rapes and gangrapes happen in India, not Bharat, because the former has embraced Western ideas and abandoned Indian values. One thing is for sure: girls and women are not pinched, groped, pounced upon or mauled in buses, trains and parks in the West the way they are in Mumbai, Delhi. I believe we need more, not less, infusion of certain Western values — respect for women’s autonomy, for example — in India.

  The reaction from Hindu and Muslim fundamentalists to the recent gang rape of a student is to blame the rape victim by accusing her of having crossed red-lines such as not going out at night. Rape in India can no longer be treated as an individual issue. It’s a social and political pathology-a part of pervasive gender violence. A woman is molested every 12 minutes, burnt for dowry every hour, and raped every 21 minutes. The various proposals made for protecting women through segregation, dress codes, CCTVs, etc involve branding and blaming them, while paternalistically denying their independent, equal identity.

  Gunmen riding on a motorcycle shot and killed a police officer escorting polio workers during a U.N.-backed vaccination campaign in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, police said.
