  Exact charges against the 65-year-old retired Concordia University professor are unknown. She is believed to be accused of “collaborating with a hostile government, propaganda against the state, and ‘dabbling in feminism.’ ” The outlook for release of Montreal anthropologist Homa Hoodfar from Iran’s Evin prison darkened Tuesday with news that a hard-line judge has dismissed her lawyer and chosen another to represent her without her consent. “This seems to be standard procedure for this judge, who has been violating many laws,” There have been widespread protests against Hoodfar’s arrest, and this week 21 former UN special rapporteurs on human rights are calling for Iran to release her immediately. They are asking the UN General Assembly to take up her case.

  Global Affairs Canada had actually told Dr. Hoodfar’s family to keep quiet about the incident and not to speak to media for fear of the Iranian authorities ire. But it was Dr. Hoodfar’s hospitalization last week and the non-action of the Trudeau government that forced them to speak out. It is high time Prime Minister Trudeau and the Government of Canada begin to practice what he so well preaches. Our self-proclaimed feminist prime minister and his gender equal cabinet need to start taking to task governments that do not keep in step with our supposed feminist ideals and that includes Ottawa’s current tango with Tehran. Dr. Hoodfar has written extensively on how the rights of women are sacrificed as they bargain with fundamentalism and she knows very well that feminism is not just theory but is most effective when practiced.

  L’image de l’Iran comme nation d’ayatollahs fana­tiques, entre­tenue par Néta­nyahou et Ahma­di­nejad, a disparu. L’Iran apparaît aujourd’hui comme une nation res­pon­sable, gou­vernée par des diri­geants modérés et avisés.

There are too many actors, conflicts, mixed and hidden motives and contradictions at play. Yet, one can clearly assert that it has nothing to do with strengthening the anti-ISIS, anti-extremist coalition of Arab forces, and that it is directed as much at Iran as Qatar.
