On March 14, 2019, at the end of a flawed and unfair process, Vancouver City Council voted to terminate the yearly grant given to us, Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, in support of our public education work.

Egypt: Asset Freeze of Mozn Hassan and Nazra for Feminist Studies
13 January 2017, by siawi3In spite of the fact that the asset freeze of “Nazra” NGO will limit our work in an obvious manner, the team vows to continue what we started with all its energy and work tools guaranteed by the constitution and law. The future we dream of for women in Egypt is far from realized, we will continue to work for it, for a better life for Egyptian women, and for the sustainability of a strong and independent Egyptian feminist movement.

The dangers of NGO-isation of women’s rights in Africa
2 February 2019, by siawi3The de-politicisation of the women’s movement is extremely dangerous for the future of African women. For the past 40 years, we have been living in times of what I regard as “the NGO-isation of civil space”, where the language and rhetoric of gender equality is mostly generated by international NGOs. The challenge of NGO-isation is that it is predominantly subject to the imagination, assumptions, and interest of Northern funding institutions and their surrogates. Women activists and feminists around the world should always remember that our engagement in women’s rights is based on what we have suffered and continue to suffer. As African feminists and activists for women’s rights and equality, let us never forget that the burden is ours to carry, and to own.

Bangladesh: New law on foreign funding will prevent organizing
26 October 2016, by siawi3Local and foreign NGOs yesterday urged President Abdul Hamid not to consent to a recently passed bill on foreign-funded NGOs, saying one of its provisions violates people’s constitutional rights to freedom of speech, thought and organisation. The provision says if any foreign-funded NGO engages in anti-state activities and finances or patronises extremism and terror activities, those would be considered as offences, and the NGO and its officials concerned would be tried under the country’s existing laws. The bill doesn’t differentiate between an offence by an individual and that by an NGO. For example, 600 individuals can work in an NGO, but the involvement of an individual in a crime doesn’t mean that the NGO is involved in it.
