  The brutal ‘Islamic State’ is a symptom of a deepening crisis of civilisation premised on fossil fuel addiction, which is undermining Western hegemony and unravelling state power across the Muslim world. Debate about the origins of the Islamic State (IS) has largely oscillated between two extreme perspectives. One blames the West. IS is nothing more than a predictable reaction to the occupation of Iraq, yet another result of Western foreign policy blowback. The other attributes IS’s emergence purely to the historic or cultural barbarism of the Muslim world, whose backward medieval beliefs and values are a natural incubator for such violent extremism. The biggest elephant in the room as this banal debate drones on is material infrastructure. Anyone can have bad, horrific, disgusting ideas. But they can only be fantasies unless we find a way to manifest them materially in the world around us.

  Mali’s desert north, where French forces took territory from rebels, is plagued by frequent attacks. But this is the first such attack for years in Bamako, located in the south, raising fears the capital will become targeted more often. “We in the al-Mourabitoun announce our responsibility for the latest operations in Bamako, which were carried out by the brave knights of the Mourabitoun to avenge the Prophet Mohammed against the infidel West, which ridiculed our prophet, and to avenge the killing of our brother Ahmed al Tilemsi.”

  Ceux qui nous gouvernent bradent la République en signant avec Doha des accords indécents. Le lycée français au Qatar n’est plus mixte et enseigne dorénavant la langue arabe et la religion musulmane. Tel est le contenu de l’accord bilatéral qui a été signé en présence de la ministre déléguée aux Français de l’étranger, le 24 janvier dernier. « Il y a trois questions qui sont importantes pour les Qataris et les Arabes qui fréquentent cette école, et ce sont l’enseignement de la charia islamique, de la langue arabe et de la séparation entre garçons et filles à partir d’un certain âge ». Vive Voltaire, c’est le nom du lycée français en question...

• Saudi embassy linked with terrorist funding in Ethiopia

  The wife of a senior Ethiopian politician was on Monday charged with funnelling money from the Embassy of Saudi Arabia to Islamist terror groups. Those arrested were accused of belonging to, or supporting, the “Solution Seekers of the Muslim Community’s Problems”, a group that the prosecution contended is a terrorist organisation.
