Multi-Directionality and Universality: Global Feminisms and International Law in the Twenty-First Century
17 November 2022, by siawi3Much of so-called progressive and feminist academic analysis (and activism) today is dominated by a simplistic, one dimensional view which—in the name of anti-racism, anti-imperialism and post-colonialism—legitimates a focus on state-generated terror and authoritarianism from above, but allows little or no room to critique cultural relativism and authoritarianism from below.

Pakistan urges West to lift sanctions on Iran
21 March 2020, by siawi3Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani had last week written letters to his counterparts across the world including Prime Minister Khan informing them how his country’s fight against Covid-19 was being impaired by the US sanctions. He had urged other countries to stop observing the American sanctions against his country. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, too, wrote to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres demanding that the US curbs be removed.

Women everywhere in the World are squeezed into a tight corner
10 July 2021, by siawi3Between 30Â June and 2Â July 2021, the United Nations and other multilateral organisations held the Generation Equality Forum in Paris (France). The forum was held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action set out at the Fourth World Conference on Women (1995). Nuclear weapons are banned: what does this mean for Britain?
11 March 2022, by siawi3Nuclear weapons continue to threaten the world with war and terror. This fact has been brought home by the invasion of Ukraine. Around 12,000 nuclear weapons are in the hands of Russia and three NATO governments (United States, UK and France). As well as these nuclear forces around Ukraine, at least a thousand more are held by militaries in China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. Recent events provide a stark reminder of what can go wrong when possessing and relying on nuclear weapons for deterrence

2 July 2022, by siawi3The deadly logic of the spiraling conflict raises the prospect that the proxy war in Ukraine will rapidly metastasize across the European continent, triggering the deadliest global military conflict since the Second World War. This reality makes clear the urgent necessity for the working class to intervene in the crisis, aiming to unite the struggles against the surging cost of living and attacks on democratic rights with the struggle against war.

Who wrote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ?
17 November 2022, by siawi3Each clause was voted on by member states. Many suggestions came from drafters from small and newly de-colonised states. Two of the most important drafters were Hansa Mehta of India, and Charles Malik of Lebanon, who was Committee Rapporteur. Hansa Mehta, an extraordinary activist and brave member of the Constituent Assembly in India, was responsible for the wording of the Article I ‘All human beings are equal in dignity and rights,’ arguing that if the word men was used, it would not be regarded as inclusive but rather taken to exclude women. She was the key figure who ensured gender equality in the document.
