As it stands the case is unprecedented. No publisher has ever been tried under the Espionage Act, which itself was essentially created for spies imparting official secrets either for profit or otherwise.

20 December 2020, by siawi3On Thursday this week a group of British parliamentarians have written to Justice Secretary Robert Buckland asking for a meeting with Julian Assange ahead of the extradition ruling which is due on 4Â January. The request came after a recent meeting with United Nations special rapporteur on torture Nils Melzer, who made an urgent call to the UK’s Johnson government for the immediate release of Assange after 10 years of arbitrary detention.

27 December 2020, by siawi3In a statement release last night, Mr Melzer argued: ’The British authorities initially detained Mr. Assange on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by Sweden in connection with allegations of sexual misconduct that have since been formally dropped due to lack of evidence.’Today, he is detained for exclusively preventative purposes. ’Mr Assange is not a criminal convict and poses no threat to anyone, so his prolonged solitary confinement in a high-security prison is neither necessary nor proportionate and clearly lacks any legal basis.’
