“If I can’t dance....” Emma Goldman

The entire debate on the dramatic events in Egypt this last week is now centred on the military intervention that has occurred on the side of the protestors. Both right wingers and liberals focus almost exclusively on the temporary intervention of the military and fail to see the much bigger story. The bigger story, in my view, is the large-scale rejection of political Islam. If this rejection of political Islam catches on in the Muslim world, it can lead to a complete historical ideological shift, destroying all remnants of semi-medieval thinking and opening the doors to progressive development.
Thirty four millions men and women went out into the streets and squares. They were determined to topple the religious government under the control of the Muslim Brothers as well as all who support them at home and abroad. They wanted to expel all who use religion for economic and political gain and to oust Morsi.
It is impossible to fight capitalist exploitation, police violence, the oppression of women, white supremacy, homophobia and other forms of dehumanization outside of collective action and organised structures - organisations and movements. We must organise – not just mobilise.
The level of women’s participation and their role in organizing daily struggles is unprecedented in the country’s history.
Despite hopes that women would be one of the prime beneficiaries of the Arab Spring, they have instead been some of the biggest losers, as the revolts have brought conflict, instability, displacement and a rise in Islamist groups in many parts of the region“. As the miserable poll results show, we women need a double revolution, one against the various dictators who’ve ruined our countries and the other against a toxic mix of culture and religion that ruin our lives as women.” “There is something about the economic and political ideology ruling the world that is against women, that is patriarchal, and is against many of the values we fight for.”
It’s an instructive lesson for a fragmented left; we may have differences in strategy, in outlook, in belief. At times these differences need to be aired openly - but we have one crucial task at hand, to unite around issues that strike a chord with millions of ordinary people.
