India: Teesta Setalvad’s arrest: Dissident Voice of a ‘Foot Soldier of the Constitution’
8 July, by siawi3Giorgio Agamben’s theorization of State of Exception comes to our mind in the context of Teesta Setalvad’s arrest: “...modern totalitarianism can be defined as the establishment, by means of the state of exception, of a legal civil war that allows for the physical elimination not only of political adversaries but of entire categories of citizens who for some reason cannot be integrated into the political system”.

Russia’s Jews fear resurgent anti-Semitism amid Ukraine war
8 July, by siawi3Jews have fled Russia in droves, but those who remain are scared of a return to the darkest days of discrimination. “Any words which we say publicly [about the war] can be used against us as a Jewish community”. “It’s back to the 1990s,” said Khanin, referring to a period when anti-Semitic conspiracy theories proliferated and far-right firebrand Vladimir Zhirinovsky spouted vitriol against Jews.

USA: With Rising Book Bans, Librarians Have Come Under Attack
8 July, by siawi3“There were comments about library staff, calling us groomers and pedophiles and saying we needed to be fired, we need to be jailed, we needed to be locked up, that all the books needed to be burned,” she said. “It got to a certain point where I thought, do I want to live here? Is this something I can subject myself to?”

Indian government proposal to study “racial purity” draws widespread attack from scientists
6 July, by siawi3The science is clear. The concept of race has no validity. In the current historical context, the proposed study, no matter how it is couched or soft-pedaled, has the most reactionary consequences. At a time when the unity of the working class is vitally important, all such actions to divide workers based on whatever distinctions must be firmly rejected. Over a hundred Indian scholars wrote an open letter to the ministry sharply criticizing the project. It stated, “[T]he notion of tracing the ‘purity of races,’ whether in India or elsewhere, is extremely worrisome. A plan to do so would be both absurd and dangerous.”

India: A week in the life of human rights defender Teesta Setalvad
6 July, by siawi3It is now more than a week since Teesta Setalvad, one of India’s most formidable and resilient human rights defenders, was targeted and held captive by a vindictive regime. But as is evident in the burgeoning support for her, both online and on the streets, you may put Teesta Setalvad behind bars, you cannot cage her courage, which is even today inspiring countless others. “It reflects an aggressive abuse of power and law by the State machinery, in grave breach of the rights and freedoms guaranteed to citizens under the Indian Constitution. This turn of events has also raised questions about the Government’s commitments to human rights and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), not just domestically but also at the global level,” said the WGHR in a statement. HRW has released a statement saying, “The Indian authorities should immediately release the prominent human rights activist Teesta Setalvad, drop all charges against her & stop their relentless attacks against her.”

Libya-UK: Counter-terrorism officials allowed Manchester bomber to operate in Libya warzone
4 July, by siawi3From 2012, it was clear that Al Qaeda and later Islamic State were increasingly active in Libya. MI5 and Greater Manchester Police had numerous opportunities to stop Salman Abedi gaining military experience and contacts in Libya for years before the 2017 Manchester bombing - but they gave him free rein.
